In the year 2091, humans have lost the ability to dream. After decades of financial and social depression, dreams and aspirations have become a recessive gene—an impossibility of the modern mind.

Greece is one of the worst social and economic disaster zones, and all hope of a better future has been lost. One young man, Nikos, discovers that he is not like everybody else—there is something different about him.

Believing that he may be going crazy, he soon discovers that he is the only person in Greece who has inherited the ability to dream. Time is running out as the government continues its tirade of corruption and suppression against the people, and Nikos must find a way to teach others how to dream so that once more society can free itself from the shackles of mental slavery.

Franz Kafka, the literary revolutionary, inspired millions of people around the world to find solidarity in their individualism. It was his awareness, justification, observation and comprehension of loneliness that made other lost souls feel free. I opened the beginning of ‘Vagabond’ with an important Kafka quote, which resonated deeply with me:

“Don’t bend; don’t water it down; don’t try to make it logical; don’t edit your own soul according to the fashion. Rather, follow your most intense obsessions mercilessly.”

Sri Lanka’s civil war- 26 years of horror

Having recently returned from New York City for a meeting regarding my book deal, my agent and I discussed possible non-fiction works. Immediately, I thought of the 26-year civil war which tore through the island paradise that is Sri Lanka, only ending as recently as 2009. Sri Lanka’s horrifying story eradicates the concept of ‘Trouble in Paradise;’ for the population, a descriptive title as bland as ‘Trouble’ is a soft synonym.’Hell’ is a more appropriate word- ‘Hell on Earth’ the more accurate description.

Currently I am waiting to hear back from the Australian government regarding a writer’s grant, which will allow me to use the valuable resources and connections I have in Sri Lanka, to write a non-fiction book about the true events during those 26 years, and how they changed the lives of everyday people. It is an incredibly important story that must be told from the human perspective; it is one that unfortunately has been glossed over in the media for far too long, and to be honest, it is nothing short of bizarre that such monstrosities were not fully covered in the mainstream media.

The writer’s grant will allow me to station myself in Sri Lanka while interviewing members of the Sinhalese and Tamil population, members of government, international lawyers, police, and ex-Tamil Tigers themselves. The ultimate aim of this upcoming novel- should the grant be awarded, will be to raise awareness of the genocide and human rights violations which took place on both sides of the law, and to provide a highly accurate, detailed, objective account of the 26-year war as told by all parties involved.

I believe that in order to fully understand an event, one cannot sit idle. It is my hope that this book- the skeleton of which has already come together, will be given the green light to go ahead so that the world can know the true story behind of one of history’s most devastating wars. Let us raise awareness, bring world issues to light, and never forget what the Sri Lankan’s have endured.

I really love cosmopolitan cities from all around the world, including Melbourne. Sometimes it can be immensely invigorating to be in the middle of a city where there is so much life and energy pulsating all around you. As a t-shirt says that I bought in Amsterdam a couple of months ago, “I can feel the city breathing” at times. Soon I will be off to the greatest city in the world, New York City, and can’t wait to experience everything that it has to offer. What is your favourite city?
